A Glimpse into Their Kitchens: Celebrating Southern Maryland History and Food
Ever wonder where stuffed ham comes from? Why we have so many local dishes including oysters? Join St. Mary’s County native Caitlyn Socrates as she talks about her research around the cookbook 300 Years of Black Cooking in St. Mary’s County Maryland, the women who provided the recipes, and the historical role food and the Black women who made it have in Southern Maryland.
Caitlyn Socrates (neé Hunter) is a doctoral candidate at Duquesne University where she researches African American literature, food, and popular culture. She is an Assistant Professor of English at the College of Southern Maryland and is currently writing a culinary memoir around her ancestry. Her first book Power in the Tongue (Tolsun Books) debuted in 2022.
